overfilling gooey slime

Check out this exceptionally gooey #Cortinarius sp., the wet slippery (viscid) layer of slime on top of this mushroom is composed of complex exo-polysaccharides that are hygroscopic (water loving). This coating of goop helps keep the cap from drying out as the mushroom is maturing. Many mushrooms employ this strategy, but I find some species of Corts have particularly copious amounts of goopy slime.
