Snake ID can be tricky and gets even trickier when juveniles don’t resemble adults of the same species. Hatchling western ratsnakes are gray with dark blotches and about 11 inches long. They darken as they grow and may become solid black or blotchy with yellow or red skin between the scales. Adults can be more than 6 feet in length.
