UP rostered a small fleet of EMD GP40X units built in the late 1970's. At first the 9000's were utilized in the freight pool but later were moved to passenger service when UP's remaining e-units were retired. Working on the PVSC local (Provo to Salt Lake City), UP 91 East is coupled.

The Electro Motive Division GP40X is a type of four-axle, 3,500 hp diesel locomotive built from 1977 to 1978. It is a rare variant of the EMD GP40, with only 23 built and only half still remaining on various leasing, shortline, and industrial companies.

An EMD GP40X is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between December 1977 and June 1978. Power for this unit was provided by a turbocharged 16-cylinder EMD 645 Diesel Engine engine which could produce 3,500 horsepower (2,610 kW). 23 examples of this locomotive were built for North American railroads.

Four UP GP40Xs ( 95, 92, 90 & 94 ) are on the point. Down below, CA Rt. 70, The Feather River Hwy, snakes along next to its namesake river. What can't be seen in the shot, is the approximately 60 railfans on the hillside photographing the train and about 20-25 girls & guys skinny dipping in Rock Creek.

GP40X - Trainspo
Union Pacific had six GP40X locos, which were frequently used as lead units on the railroad's hottest piggyback trains between Omaha/Fremont and North Platte, Nebraska. On one particular trip by this photographer, all six GP40X units were seen leading trains on this division in one day.
