A school of some type of barbs appropriate for your tank size (odessa, mascara, black ruby, tiger, rosy, gold, etc.) or a school of sturdy tetras. I had Diamond tetras with my golden gourami and they did very well. Red phantoms might be pretty with the blue gourami.

Hmm, wouldn't the 20-gallons be too small for a blue gourami? Thick-lipped or banded gouramis would be what you want. I have kept them with guppies/mollies before, and they go together fine.
